When you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of Colombo’s streets, take a walk down to the open promenade near the edge of the sea known as Galle Face Green. The vast open space was originally used by the Dutch to allow a clear line of fire for the cannons positioned at the fort. Today, Galle Face Green is a popular spot for local families and tourists to relax next to the clear blue waters of the Indian Ocean.

The large, historic Hindu temple is not difficult to find! Located behind the Fort Railway Station, the richly decorated temple is dedicated to the Hindu gods Shiva and Ganesh and is a must see during a trip to Colombo.

In the centre of the city is the small prison cell of the last Sri Lankan king – King Sri Wickrama Rajashinghe. The cell contains images of the king and queen, as well as the flag of the Kandian Kingdom. Outside of the cell stands a statue of the king.

Being the largest city in Sri Lanka and its commercial hub, Colombo boasts the National Museum which is a highly recommended place to visit if you’re interested in learning more about the country’s past, including its kings (including the throne and crown of the Kandyan monarchs whom ruled during the 15th to 19th centuries) and interesting historic artefacts.
